This short process outlines the testing method for the EI Inverter, Battery, and ATS. It verifies the system successfully enters Backup during a grid outage, and returns to normal operating behavior when the grid comes back.
Preconditions:
Ensure all system software updates are complete using the EI App. |
|
Verify the EI 200A ATS Manual Bypass Switch jumper has been removed. |
|
Ensure the generator has fuel and a strong battery (if applicable). |
|
The EI inverter has synced to the grid, and the green LED is steady. |
Step 1 – Turn off the main breaker to the installation to simulate a grid outage
Step 2 – Observations
- EI ATS shifts to off-grid position (audible)
- It should take about 500ms for the house loads to come back on
- EI Inverter Grid icon LED turns off
- EI Inverter System Status LED icon blinks in 0.5s intervals
- Grid icon disappears in EI App
- EI App power flow between PV, EI Battery, EI Inverter, and the Home

Step 3 – Test Generator Auto Startup (if applicable)
Note: The low SOC for an automatic generator start is 20%
- Turn on loads in the home to facilitate battery discharge
- Once the SOC reaches 20%, the EI Inverter will send a generator start request
- Verify the generator starts (audible)
- Verify the generator icon replaces the grid icon in the EI App
- Turn off all loads in the home to facilitate battery charging.
- Verify the generator shuts off at 95% SOC.
Step 4 – Turn on the main breaker to the installation to simulate grid return
- After 5 minutes, the ATS will shift to the grid position (audible)
- There may be a small flicker in the house lighting
- EI Inverter System Status LED icon stops blinking
- EI Inverter Grid LED icon is steady green
- In the EI App, the Grid icon returns
The system is now operating normally. If any expected behavior is not observed, begin troubleshooting in the next section.
Troubleshooting
The most common causes of backup mode testing failures are:
1. Incomplete software updates on all equipment: EI Battery, EI Inverter, EI ATS
-
- Use the EI App to complete the software updates
2. Incorrect communication wiring between the EI ATS (200A) and the EI Inverter
-
- Verify the wiring between the ATS and Inverter
3. Bypass Jumper is still installed in the EI ATS
-
- Use the AI ATS quick start guide to return the bypass switch to normal operating condition
