The short answer is: Yes, Tigo's TS4 family is backward compatible with earlier MLPEs and legacy system equipment.
However, some older products may not have the function that is desired from the newer systems. There are some considerations to be made when introducing cross-generational products:
- RSD Compliance
- MLPE Group Distinction
- Generational Updates
- Module Compatibility
- Regional Regulations
RSD Compliance
The modern TS4 Monitoring Group is fully compliant with NEC regulations for RSD compliance. However, older legacy products produced before 2017 do not support this function, which makes the mix of products compatible but not compliant.
If you are adding TS4s to a legacy system, it will not make the system compliant with NEC regulations.
This can be acceptable for some ground-mounted or grandfathered systems (one with original data loggers, or inverters that were made prior to 2017). However, structure-mounted systems (rooftops, etc.) require an entirely modernized system (TS4s with TAP & CCA) to comply with NEC rules.
If you have any more questions about regulations, please ask the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction) for your area.
MLPE Group Distinction
The TS4 Flex monitoring group of devices is divided into 2 categories:
Monitoring - Ones that communicate through wireless radio signal.
Fire Safety - Ones that do not communicate data, but operate with PLC (power line communication)
These two groups are not cross-compatible because they operate under 2 different communication protocols.

Generational Updates
If a system includes older series data MLPEs (maximizers) mixed with new TS4 units, the system may also require updates for generational functionality. With that being said, there are also functions that the TS4 may offer, that cannot be updated or activated on an older system. For this reason, it's always best to check with the Support Team before making the replacement.
Our highly trained Engineers know of particular updates and issues that must be addressed with multi-generational components (some listed below). Their assistance will also be crucial in discovering the system's newer (or older) MLPEs.
Module Compatibility
The older legacy product offered different specs than the modern TS4 family. For this reason, it's always best to review the datasheets of all the MLPEs on the system to confirm that they will be appropriate for the Modules you have chosen.
Regional Regulations
If your system is a legacy system (built before 2017), it may be covered under grandfathered systems and there may be regulations that discuss what can be updated. Please check with your local AHJ before adding or replacing anything. They will let you know what is legally admissible in your area.
