Introduction
Tigo's first generation of the TS4 family was produced in 2 primary versions:
- TS4-R (retrofit) - MLPE units that could be connected to any existing panel.
- TS4-B (base) - MLPE units that were built into PV Modules (integrated).
The base models were produced for limited partnerships with PV Module manufacturers. They were assembled by the Manufacturer and sold as Smart Modules. For more info, see: TS4 Covers.
Note: TS4-Base integrated Smart Modules are a Tigo legacy product that is no longer in production or for sale.
Long Strings
Long Strings was a technical functionality of the TS4-B-L that was introduced between 2015 and 2018. It created a hard output voltage limit that the OEM PV Module manufacturer set during manufacturing. This limit was set to just slightly above the module's Vmp to maintain a maximum voltage ceiling, while not affecting the performance of the module.
This voltage limiting allowed system designers to increase the string length up to the maximum input voltage (as designated by the Inverter).
The primary purpose was to control any variance (between Vmp and Voc) that may happen during cold weather conditions. This effectively removed the need for Temperature Correction and reduced potential damage from over-voltage events.
Legacy Care
Those who have purchased integrated Smart Modules can still receive troubleshooting and advice from Tigo Support. However, if the Smart Module is found to be degraded or has experienced an issue, the owner must reach out to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer), for warranty coverage and replacement.
