SMA Tigo Compatibility Guidelines

Design Guidelines

All SMA inverters follow standard Tigo and SMA design guidelines, except for the following SMA models:

  • Sunny Boy SB 3600 SE-10 ("Smart Energy")
  • Sunny Boy SB 5000 SE-10 ("Smart Energy")
  • Sunny Boy SB 3000 TL-21
  • Sunny Boy SB 3600 TL-21
  • Sunny Boy SB 4000 TL-21
  • Sunny Boy SB 5000 TL-21

For the installations using the inverter models listed above, follow the design guidelines below:

Installations with Tigo TS4-S or TS4-R-S:

  • Design your system so string voltage never exceeds 500 Vdc at any temperature. Note that the system will turn on normally each morning, however if for any reason the inverter was turned OFF in mid day it would only be able to power back ON the next day.
  • If the SMA inverter model listed above is used in Off-Grid mode do not use in combination with an SMA Sunny Island, regardless of DC string voltage of the inverter.

 

Installations with Tigo TS4-O 375 W, TS4-R-O 375 W, or 2ES series:

  • Design your system so string voltage never exceeds 500 Vdc at any temperature. Note that the system will turn on normally each morning, however if for any reason the inverter was turned OFF in mid day it would only be able to power back ON the next day.
  • If the SMA inverter model listed above is used in Off-Grid mode do not use in combination with an SMA Sunny Island, regardless of DC string voltage of the inverter.
  • Design flexibility features, such as different orientations, shade mitigation and different parallel string length, are not impacted and will function as normal. For further information on design flexibility check: uneven stringsdesign into shadedifferent orientationsmix and match different PV modules

 

Installations with Tigo Integrated Smart Module using TS4-L 375 W, MM-JES, or MM-HBF:

  • Design your system so string voltage never exceeds 500 Vdc, remember to check the PV module manufactures data sheet for an integrated smart module as cold temperature coefficients are typically is 0 V/°C increase with integrated smart PV modules using this Tigo product line. Always be sure to check the PV module manufactures data sheet for the exact Voc value and temperature coefficient. Note that the system will turn on normally each morning, however if for any reason the inverter was turned OFF in mid day it would only be able to power back ON the next day. 
  • If the SMA inverter model listed above is used in Off-Grid mode do not use in combination with an SMA Sunny Island, regardless of DC string voltage of the inverter.
  • Design flexibility features, such as long strings, different orientations, shade mitigation and different parallel string length, are not impacted and will function as normal. Installations with all other Tigo TS4 models TS4-D, TS4-M, TS4-R-M:

  • No change to standard system design guidelines. These products will work according to standard Tigo and SMA design guidelines.

 

AFCI Compliance 

TS4-O and TS4-L

The following SMA America US products with integrated AFCI are compatible with Tigo TS4 UHD-Core only (note: the following are not compatible with previous versions of Tigo TS4):

  • Sunny Boy SB 3.0-US-40
  • Sunny Boy SB 3.8-US-40
  • Sunny Boy SB 5.0-US-40
  • Sunny Boy SB 6.0-US-40
  • Sunny Boy SB 7.0-US-40
  • Sunny Boy SB 7.7-US-40

All Tigo TS4 products are compatible with the following SMA America US product line with integrated AFCI:

  • Sunny Boy SB 3000TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 3800TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 4000TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 5000TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 6000TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 7000TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB 7700TL-US-22
  • Sunny Boy SB -US-12: All US Models
  • Sunny Tripower STP: All US Models

Installations with all other Tigo TS4 models TS4-D, TS4-M, TS4-S:

  • These products will work with all SMA AFCI cards.
